Yali + Larry: Quail Ranch Wedding

Quail Ranch wedding first look

This wedding took place at Quail Ranch, out in Simi Valley, which is in that part of SoCal with enough elevation to give you great weather and views for outdoor events.

When I met with Yali, she expressed to me that she had taken some photography courses in college and had a fondness for black and white photos. My third camera for their wedding was my Nikon FE2 loaded with Ilford HP5. To me, the real surprise was using this film at night outdoors, which comes with all sorts of uncertainties. It loved my off-camera lighting setup and continued to produce pleasing micro contrast.

One thing I noticed about Quail Ranch was the way the sunlight fell toward the end of the day. The property told me it may have just been a coincidence that the buildings were laid out in a way to maximize on sunset. Whether you’re dealt good design or not, photojournalism’s duty is to take what you’re given, with lighting and otherwise, and making the best of it!

A Wedding in Berkeley and Palo Alto

On the last weekend of July, I took a flight out to the Bay Area in California to shoot a wedding. I’ve been to San Francisco, but never the surrounding cities. The wedding day started out in Berkeley, a colorful and fun city to explore, and continued in Palo Alto. The weather went from light drizzle, clouds, and fog to blue skies and sun. I absolutely love the way that works but I’m sure saying that makes me sound like a total tourist. Without further ado!

A Queens County Farm Museum Wedding

Before I even had the chance to blog about some locations I would like to photograph around New York, I was invited to photograph Steven and Christine’s wedding at one of the coolest locations in Queens. In the backyard of my home borough is this nifty, open spot where cows graze and stretches of crops lend themselves to some epic scenery.

Once again, I was witness to a traditional garb and ceremony, this time Korean. This has definitely been one of the great perks of photography – to experience all sorts of cultures and their wedding practices.
